Radio Studies

Radio StudyOverview:

A study for a new system is more than using a pair of radios to establish a temporary link.  Decisions must be made both before and after testing about frequency band, hardware selection, equipment configuration, installation requirements, etc., which determine system function and reliability.  Our engineers have been designing, installing, and maintaining radio frequency (RF) telemetry systems for 25 years.  The combination of expertise in both telemetry and process control helps our engineers to design and implement systems to match your application.

Preparation Work:

Preliminary analysis based on GPS coordinates.  Frequency band is selected based on distance, topography, bandwidth requirements, and availability.  RF modeling software is used to help select equipment and calculate installation requirements such as antenna height, sizing, and orientation.   Digital Elevation Models, combined with available aerial photographs, are used to identify possible obstructions and reflection planes.  A comprehensive model is used to predict system reliability using system characteristics, climate, and atmosphere. Check for pre-existing licensed frequencies.  Inter-modulation analysis performed if co-locating with existing systems.

On site work :

In addition to point-to-point testing, a survey with a spectrum analyzer is performed to identify other frequencies in use.  Testing results are compared with expected values to help refine equipment selection and installation requirements.

Analysis and Report:

The type and level of reporting is tailored to the individual job requirements.  If our engineers are performing the installation, we have the information necessary to proceed if analysis indicates the solution is feasible.  If the survey is required for a bid job, we can produce a detailed report to provide potential contractors with a clear path to implementation.
